ABOUT
Mining boomed in the 19th century, but the job was dangerous and miners needed boots that could stand up to the harsh conditions. Photo courtesy of Minnesota Historical Society.
STYLE NO. 8117: Iron Range / Cork Sole
The 8117 is a rugged 6-Inch boot, featuring premium Navy Abilene Roughout leather, chrome hardware, speed hooks, Goodyear welt construction and triple stitched quality. Its double layer leather toe cap, leather heel pocket and Cork outsole make it a favorite.
THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE
The local residents of the Mesabi Iron Range in northern Minnesota are proudly known as Iron Rangers due to their rugged toughness. The Iron Ranger work boots were built for iron miners in this region who required a double layer of leather over the toe for extra safety. It's tough and elegant all at once.
MATERIALS
ROUGHOUT LEATHER
Roughout leather is created using a reverse-suede technique at our very own S.B. Foot Tanning Co. While most tanneries split, thin and weaken the hide to create the rough suede surface, we simply use the other side of the hide. By doing so, we avoid splitting or thinning our full-grain hides. This makes our Roughout leather just as strong and durable as our other leathers.

A last is a form shaped similarly to that of a human foot and is used by shoemakers to determine the size, toe box and heel height for the finished shoe.

SIZING & BREAK IN
In order to build a Red Wing boot to an exact size and width, the boot is constructed around a shoe last.
STYLE NO. 8117: Iron Range / Cork Sole
A new pair of Red Wing Heritage boots should fit comfortably tight on your foot, with enough room to freely wiggle your toes. Over time the full grain leather upper, leather footboard and cork midsole mold to your feet, creating an enduring and customized fit over time with each wear.
THE 8117 IS BUILT USING THE NO. 8 LAST:
A last is used in shoemaking to give footwear its three-dimensional shape. Resembling the human foot, the last determines critical toe, heel and girth dimensions for fit, style and function.
  • Fits a variety of foot shapes
  • Should be sized up ½ if used with a footbed or orthotic
