THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STYLE
The 9086 and 9087 Mil-1 Oxford shoes are new additions to our Classic Dress collection. Named after the founder of Red Wing Shoe Company, Mr Charles Beckman, Red Wing’s ‘Classic Dress’ line was produced between the brand initiation 1905 to late 1930's. Those days, Red Wing shoes styles or work wear were largely formal.
There was no clear border between work and dress in terms of dressing. Across the board, shoes had thin sole of leather or solid rubber and nail together heel. Generally, shoes made in the earlier days had taller height than today’s and work shoes for outside work was mostly below knee length. Even office worker seemed to wear around 6-inch height boot under a circumstance of pioneering phase in mid-west part including Minnesota.
In late 1920’s United State enjoyed booming economy, infrastructure environment was consolidated and motorisation became widespread. These elements influenced shoes height to become shorter to fit the lifestyle demand for lighter and formal dressing . Red Wing Shoe Company corresponded with increased low quarter shoes variations seen in their product portfolio.
After the Great Depression in 1930’s, work boots height became even shorter and transited to simpler, high cost performance type shoes that cover from light work to formal situation. Ancestral service shoes types with low quarters were increasingly introduced.
